Mezzacorona 2012 Pinot Grigio Review

Here at CGR, we love Italian wines. There are so many growing regions, different types of grapes, microclimates, and terriors that you could honestly spend a lifetime drinking nothing but Italian wines; never having the same one twice. Unfortunately, if you don’t live in Italy or even the European Union, you may not get to taste many of these absolutely stunning wines. Here in the USA most folks have heard of the quintessential wines like Chianti or Pinot Grigio. Pinot Grigio (a clone of Pinot Gris) is grown far and wide but the best ones come from the northern part of Italy. Pinot Grigio is often light, slightly fruity, and rather innocuous. It’s a popular choice among folks who are new to wine or those who prefer very simple whites. Many more advanced palates might shun Pinot Grigio because of this but that would be a crime. Wines like the Mezzacorona 2012 Pinot Grigio have a lot more to them than the average Pinot Grigio. In fact, the Mezzacorona 2012 Pinot Grigio is a perfect summer food pairing wine!

The Mezzacorona 2012 Pinot Grigio comes in at 12.5% alcohol. It’s grown in the Italian Alps in spectacular hillside vineyards. I’m pretty sure this is 100% Pinot Grigio and was steel tank fermented. There were no issues with the bottle. We used a generic stemless tasting glass. The wine was chilled to just under 55 degrees. When the wine was opened we were greeted with a strong mineral note and a more faint lemon peel note. The wine is a bit darker than your average Pinot Grigio, almost resembling a French Pinot Gris in it’s straw yellow hue.

The nose on the Mezzacorona 2012 Pinot Grigio was an intense experience. The mineral accord is huge with distinct limestone, carbon, and a bit of flint. This mineral accord was supported by lemon and quince that blend nicely together. The acidity was very lively but never too high. The flavors in the wine were predominately lemon, lime, quince, and minerals with hints of green figs, honey, apple, and honeysuckle. The finish was like the Energizer Bunny, it just kept going and going. In the finish the lemon reappears but is only there briefly, letting the cleansing minerals shine through. The fig, apple, and lemon came out very strong when paired with the flatbread pizza I made. The minerals and acidity were slightly tamed by the fat from the olive oil and the Prosciutto.

The Mezzacorona 2012 Pinot Grigio is a bit of a quandary to rate. The flavors are outstanding but occasionally the sips were too mineral in flavor for both my husband and I. I love a strong mineral note but not when it overtakes the fruit. If the minerals in the wine were softened ever so slightly we could easily rate it in the low 90’s for it’s depth of unique flavors and perfumed nose. On the Standard Wine Spectator scale we give this wine 86 points. I will certainly buy this wine again as it’s perfect for summer fare like pasta or potato salad, shellfish, antipasti, and grilled chicken or fish. It would also be a great accompaniment to Caprese salad which is a summertime staple at my house.

    I actually have no idea what ‘mineral accords’ actually taste like. And I freakin’ live in the Terres de Lavaux! I should just go to one of the wine tastings in Lutry with my boyfriend and make an effort to learn more about wine.

      In all seriousness, since you live is Swiss wine country it might help socially or even business wise to learn some or at least find a few you like you can serve at parties or order when you are out. All the Swiss wines I had were pretty soft with excellent aroma/nose. Even the reds! There are also some great pink sparklers from Montreux!
