Wearing a large portion of this list all at once!
Makeup is a hard category to write about in terms of what is the best. Something that works for me won’t always work for you. The best makeup products of 2014 for me either solved problems in my routine or filled in holes. Some of the things I’m mentioning I didn’t actually buy, I just tried them in the store several times. I will strive to denote what I have tested and what I own. These will also be products new for 2014 or products new to me for 2014!
Primers or Base Product
Chanel Blanc de Chanel (tested and own a mini!) is a great all-around base that doesn’t aggravate my skin which is surprising. It makes you look a bit more healthy and smooth. It’s not overly awesome at extending your foundations wear time but it certainly makes it go on a bit nicer. It lightly blurs pores and helps conceal minor redness. I’m not a big primer person and this is more like a light lotion. I haven’t done a full review since I only have a mini but I will probably buy a full size soon.
NARS Pro-Prime Light Optimizing Primer is a good all around formula that ticks about every box for me. I don’t find it that illuminating but it makes Sheer Glow a lot easier to apply! I’m not 100% sure if this gives me pimples or not as I was testing some other products while using my XL sample.
BB or CC Cream
YSL Top Secrets All In One BB Cream in clear is a good match for my summer skin tone. It works well with my skin type as long as I’m well moisturized. It evens moderate redness and makes the skin look smoother in texture. It doesn’t seem to aggravate my skin at all. I got an XL sample from Sephora. The only criticism I have is it oxidized in the container quickly and would oxidize just slightly on my skin too. I can’t wear it in the winter because of this. I may buy a tube for summer. This doesn’t unseat my favorite TM but it’s a nice option.
Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12 Hour Primer in Fair seemed like a miracle product when I swatched it in store so I got an XL sample. Unfortunately, it’s highly silicone nature broke me out rather quickly and balled up if you tried to layer the coverage or put other foundation/concealer on top. I also found after a few hours it would pool in my pores. This might work for you if you don’t have large pores or dry skin and only need a light layer of coverage.
NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in Chantilly or Vanilla makes excellent matches for my skin. It works well on blemishes and under eyes for me. I’ll do a full review soon and I purchased this in the full size!
Chanel Éclat Lumière in Beige Rose is a hybrid between a highlighter and a traditional concealer. It makes the under eye area look so smooth it’s almost like you’ve photoshopped it. The product is not really good anywhere else but it corrects my dark circles and looks 100% natural. It’s layer-able too. Will purchase a full size in 2015.
Tarte Maracuja Creaseless Concealer is a good multipurpose concealer. It’s very drying on the under eye unless it’s been moisturized within an inch of its life but it offers great creaseless coverage once it’s on. It is great for blemishes in the T-Zone. No matter how much oil my face put out this didn’t budge. As long as you prep correctly, you can wear this with dry skin but I’d recommend it for oily skin without hesitation. The pigment level is off the charts so only use the smallest amount and layer it to your desired coverage.
Le Tient Touche Éclat Illuminating Foundation worked well on me when properly exfoliated, moisturized, and applied in a more generous fashion. I will need the BR10 as B10 was a touch too yellow after settling down on my face. Its best property is knocking out redness quite completely for flushing or Rosacea. Pimple redness isn’t as covered and neither are fresher scars but any other type is concealed. It lasts well without primer and looks better as you wear it up until about the 8 hour mark. It will start to pool in my pores. I’ve been using my XL sample as a corrector around the reddest areas of my face since it’s not a perfect color match. If BR 10 will be a good match, I’ll probably purchase it.
Perricone No Foundation Foundation was my favorite that I was able to try this year. It more than earns it place on my list of the best makeup products of 2014. The sunscreen in it is good and your skin feels and looks better with it on. Read my review for specifics.
NARS Radiant Cream Compact Foundation in Siberia was just right for me. Buffing it or stippling it on with a brush or a damp sponge gives the best coverage/finish. You really have to work it if you have large pores and flaky skin but it has lovely medium coverage and a touch of glow to it.
#1 Full Coverage Liquid
Chanel Perfection Lumière really covers up a multitude of sins when applied with a duo-fiber brush. I didn’t even need concealer on any marks and my under eye circles were quite covered too! I’ll be buying a full bottle in BR12 this year. I don’t like full coverage normally and this is an exception. See my full review here.
#1 Powder Foundation
Gabriel Organics Dual Powder Foundation has great matte coverage that is a fine slap on and go product. You can buff it in or just lightly dust it on.
Chanel Les Beiges is a great powder that can be built up to mimic a light powder foundation, a one sweep setting powder, or used as a bronzer/contour. It’s amazing.
NARS Loose Powder is great for setting, especially under eyes and any concealed areas.
NARS Contour Blush in Olympia is a good choice for pale people. It looks pretty natural. I need something slightly more taupe based for heavy contouring.
Perricone No Bronzer Bronzer was a big surprise. I thought it would be too dark and too warm but it’s really perfect. The bronze is very translucent so it blends with your skin tone. It also mixes well with foundation or moisturizer.
Chanel Camélia De Plumes was the best. I’d have bought it if it wasn’t $72!
Chanel Joues Contraste in Jersey is a perfect universal shade. Even though it’s warm it still works on me and is quite sophisticated.
Clinique Cheek Pop Blush in Berry was a favorite this year too. The formula is great and I highly recommend it for those of you who like a sheen to their blush that is in no way glittery.
Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelée gives great coverage and blends well. They last a long time on my drier cheeks and don’t aggravate my sensitive cheek skin. Perfect for spring and summer.
Perricone No Blush Blush is perfect all year, easy to blend, and is a fairly universal shade. It looked a little warm on my cool skin but it was still wearable. Just as natural looking as the JM if not more so.
#1 Lip Crayon
Burt’s Bees Creamy Lip Crayon in Napa Vineyard is an amazing high pigment pencil that is natural and long lasting! I hope they expand the color selection.
NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien was another favorite purchase this year. Full review coming!
#1 Lip Gloss
Revlon Ultra HD Lip Lacquer was the best this year. It’s just as good as the HE glosses! I have 3 now and I’ll be buying a fourth soon!
NARS Lip Gloss was reformulated this year and it’s quite nice now. I love the colors and opacity selection. I could see buying a whole lot of these in the future.
NARS Audacious Lipstick is on every best makeup products of 2014 list out there. It might not be the best formula ever but it’s certainly a top tier formula with an immense color selection. None of these are matte but they range in finish from satin to really creamy/glossy. There are about 10 colors I plan on amassing. No secret the majority is berries, reds, and wines because they are all very flattering.
Gabriel Organics Meritage lipstick was a new for fall color that is an exceptional wine berry shade which is what drew me to it. The formula has become a favorite because it is very lightweight but emollient and packed with color.
Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Lip Shine is a great product for those of you who prefer a non-sticky glossy sheer wash of color. The reds, berries, and wines are great options if you are wary of pigment packed dark lipsticks as these will add a touch of vampiness while still being very natural.
#1 Liquid Lipstick
Hourglass Opaque Rouge Lipstick still makes my lips peel after use but when you need a matte lipstick that won’t go anywhere for 12 hours+ this is what you need to buy.
L’Oreal Extraordinaire by Color Riche was a great hit with me! It’s only going to last color wise for a few hours and doesn’t really stain but the pigment is pretty impressive even for the lighter shades and Rose Melody managed to change my lip color enough to almost qualify as a nude. Full review forthcoming and I can see me picking up some of the darker and juicier shades soon.
#1 Lip Liner
NARS Velvet Lip Liner is pretty frickin’ good. You can use it like a regular lip pencil or just to line. Great color selection including orange so there is something for everyone. It’s a creamy comfortable matte that stays put.
Eye Brow Products
Chanel Crayon Sourcils Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil is a fantastic all around product. It provides color, hold, and a touch of volume. It wears like iron and the colors are very natural. Brun Naturel is a great color for me because it’s a light brown with equal undertones of red and taupe. While not matching my auburn hair on my head it matches my brow shade pretty exactly and keeps everything looking harmonious. If you have hair that is dark blonde with strawberry highlights to medium auburn brown this is the shade for you!
NARS Brow Gel in Athens was a good match for me. I was surprised by the level of hold without being flaky or crunchy. The colors are ok but there should be more overall selection. The brush is a bit large so if you have super skinny brows this might be hard to apply evenly.
NARS Brow Perfector colors are just wrong. They have weird green undertones and the product is very stiff and hard.
Chella Mascara was my favorite daytime mascara this year. I’m not sure what is up with the company since their web page is down and Amazon is sold out of most of their stuff. I’ve been holding off on a full review because no one can buy it. It’s seriously the best natural mascara I’ve ever used and I love it to bits. Perfect for day wear or times you don’t need a false lash look.
Le Volume in Prune, Brun Naturel on brows and Poésie on the lids!
L’Oreal Infallible Silkissime Eyeliner I’m still testing it but it’s beating out or on par with all my HE liners. Full review to come.
Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof has a great shade range and they are easy to use and wear well.
Rimmel ScandalEyes Nude turned orange on me. Not a good orange either. Formula was ok.
Chella Eyeliner Pen is possibly one of the best liquids I’ve ever tried. It’s also organic. It’s budge proof on the lash line even at the gym. I accidentally wore it to bed the first night I was testing it and it stayed on for almost 48 hours until I washed my face. Full review when their website is back up.
#1 Cream or Gel
Benefit They’re Real Push Up Liner is a little gimmicky but the product is solid. It’s not a fine tip but you can dispense some and use it with a thin brush if desired.
NARS Eye Paint is pretty boss. It’s multi-purpose and it works well. The colors are wonderful! I plan on getting several as I’ve only tested them a few times on my eyes at the counter.
#1 Quad or Quint
Chanel Poésie was my favorite this year! It was LE but I see it on the web so I’m linking it! All the colors in the new formula that came out this fall are amazing. Tisse Gabrielle is probably next on my list.
NARS Lhasa has my heart!
#1 Double or Triple
I got some great tools this year. Chella’s heated eyelash curler and Real Techniques brushes were chief among them!
L’Oreal Gel Lacque System is fantastic! I own seven shades now and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon! They last for about a week on average and stay shiny the whole time with minimal wear!
Ok! I think that about covers it! Thank you for sticking it out for this long list of the best makeup products of 2014! I hope you found something new to try or if you have something you like better than what I’ve mentioned feel free to start a dialogue!
