Rex Goliath Sangria. I hated the CK Mondavi Chardonnay so much I didn’t even photograph it.
Talk about epic fails… These wines were both so bad I had to throw them out. My neighbors had found some pre-bottled sangria that was actually fairly good so when I saw the Rex Goliath I went out on a limb and got it. I’ve enjoyed some of their wines and I think they are great, widely available, budget wines. As for the CK Mondavi Chardonnay, I’ve enjoyed the lesser Mondavi selections (though I’ve not seen this line before) so I thought, this won’t be bad. I’m pretty sure prison toilet wine would have been more palatable than either of these selections.
The Rex Goliath Sangria tasted like a fruity concoction from Bath and Body Works. It smells good enough to eat or drink but it’s actually soap. This wine tasted like a lemon berry soap. No joke. It was absolutely vile. My husband switched my glass with his just in case some dish soap remained in my glass but his was just as bad. Being the trooper he is, he tasted it and almost wretched. Down the drain it went.
CK Mondavi Chardonnay, where do I begin. It sucks you in with a generic oaky Chardonnay smell. The taste was revolting. Take apple juice, add wood chips from a playground that have been fairly freshly applied but still on the ground for a few days and add a dash of rice wine vinegar. Then add a chemical vanilla flavor and some lemon essence and you have this wine. We tried adding some extra chill and it only got worse. It then tasted like apple juice, fresh wood chips, and lemon Pinesol.
I like Rex Goliath and up until now, I’ve had nothing but respect for Mondavi inc. I still like Rex Goliath. I can’t believe RM would have approved this line of wines and feel like they are jumping the shark and sullying his legacy. I understand in today’s economy you need to compete with Three Buck Chuck but both brands have failed to even meet that quality which is really saying something.
