Roulé Rouge Organic Wine is currently on special at Trader Joes. I saw it on an end cap with a big Organic sticker slapped on it and thought “an organic wine for $6 bucks, yes please!” so into the cart it went! Luckily it’s a very nice daily drinker type so I was happy to try it and I’ve already bought more!
Roulé Rouge Organic Wine is 100% Merlot grapes from the central coast of California. This wine has no added sulfates either. The ABV is 13%. I have no idea how it was aged but I’m going to guess it’s a combo of steel tank and neutral oak. We chilled the wine lightly and aerated it with our Vinturi. We used stemless red wine glasses for tasting. Upon opening the wine, we got a strong aroma of cherry. The wine is a deep violet that almost looks like grape juice, so make sure to watch children around this once it’s poured.
The Roulé Rouge Organic Wine has a rather large nose even without swirling it at all. The nose gives raspberry, cherry, blackberry, and cola aromas. Another reason to watch the kiddos, it smells like a juice blend! The taste is juice like too at first with all the fruits and cola from the nose, but then you get a rush of espresso, light oak, and baking spices. Right before the finish you get a tobacco note and a juicy tart red plum flavor that’s quite surprising. The finish is lengthy with hints of plum, spice, tobacco, espresso and a very dry vanilla. The tannins are mature but fine so even if you don’t like a lot of tannins this should still provide a smooth drinking experience. The acid in the in the wine is on the lively side of medium, making your mouth water with lip smacking plummy tartness.
I’m sure by now you can tell I like this one a lot. My husband agrees, calling it “very pleasant” which is about as good as it gets from him. It’s got decent flavor and acid and will complement a wide range of foods. It’s not overly complex and it’s easy to drink but far from boring. With the current inconsistency of the other daily drinker organic line at Trader Joes (Green Fin) this is the next best thing. A solid 88 points and a definite re-buy.
