I’m not a huge fan of Michael Kors perfumes on the whole. I respect his eponymous original scent as the bombastic warm white floral that it is. It’s well made and very heady but wearable. My favorite Kors creation was called just that, Kors. It was feminine but masculine with interesting notes like leather, all kinds of woods, tobacco, port, and brandy. It was one of my favorite scents. When I was at the mall a few days ago I heard people oohing and ahhing over his new creations so I figured I’d give them a whiff. Turns out these are very simple creations, which isn’t bad but I prefer more development in my fragrances. Let me give you a quick rundown of the notes in each one as I smelled them all but only sprayed one.
Cassis, Tiare, and Vanilla
Pear, Jasmine, Amber
Mandarin, Orange Flower, Vetiver
When I smelled all of them I was drawn to White Luminous Gold but decided to go outside my comfort zone. That one smells only of pear and amber when I sprayed it on a card. I got no jasmine at all. It’s not sweet or cloying on the card but certainly gourmand. 24K Brilliant Gold smelled like a citrusy stripped down version of the original MK scent. Mind you I hadn’t seen the notes at this point. I was hoping Rose Radiant Gold would have some rose in it so I sprayed it on after a tentative sniff. The cassis in this fragrance is sharper than Armani Si and almost as tenacious. There does seem to be some unadvertised notes of rose and peony blended into the composition sitting between the top and heart note. The Tiare note is nice and floral-y creamy like most of the brands white floral compositions. The vanilla is a whisper and must be blended with a white musk. On the clothing, this is one tenacious scent. I got some on my jacket and purse and I still smell it strongly a week later. I only smell the cassis and white floral scent. On the skin the top note does not stay very long, 10 minutes at most. The Tiare mellows quickly too but sticks around and blends with the light musky vanilla for a good 10 hours on my skin. On clothes, the cassis is extremely loud with powerful silage. I can smell my purse from across the room right now, 5 days after spraying it. If you plan to spray your clothes, one spritz is enough. I did two on the skin and noticed how light it was and quickly it faded and then sprayed my clothes once. I felt like Pigpen for the rest of the day but in a cloud of MK’s vibe, but the effect was less Hamptons and more Long Island.
Oy Vey. I don’t hate it, but I wouldn’t buy it for me. I think the performance on the skin is sub par in terms of development, but I prefer the scent on skin to on clothes. I can see it being very popular. If you like Armani Si and want something less complex give this a squirt. If I was forced to rate it, I’d give it a C+ but scent is very personal!
