The North by Northwest 2013 Reisling is the first Reisling to enter my home in a long time. After living in Germany in Hesse, I drank a lot of Reisling. Maybe too much. But it’s been a few years so I decided to pick this one at Trader Joe’s on a lark. I’ve never disliked Riesling, I just drank way too much of it and it’s rare to find a good one in the states that’s budget friendly enough but interesting enough to keep me buying it. This one was $5 so I figured I’d try it.
The North by Northwest 2013 Reisling is considered to be a dry Reisling by the producers. All the fruit comes from the Horse Haven Hills. This vintage was hand harvested and whole cluster pressed. The juice was cold settled, cold fermented, and then Sur lie aged for four months. I chilled the wine to 45 degrees and used a stemless white wine glass for tasting. If you are going to sip this slowly or serve it in a warm room, I’d suggest a Corkcicle. When I opened the wine there was a nice blended fruit note immediately. The wine is a mid toned gold with peridot shift.
North by Northwest 2013 Reisling has a very perfumed nose full of apple, peaches, and lychee. There are hints of minerals, citrus, and florals in the nose as well when you really swirl it well. It tastes very much like it smells with additional strong notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, pear, and lime. The florals hit you right before the finish. The finish is of medium length to slightly long depending on how well you coat your mouth in the wine. The finish is fruity and slightly herbaceous with notes of honey. The acidity is nice making it crisp and clean but not sour. The sugar is what I would consider off dry. It’s not sweet sweet but it’s certainly over what I tend to consider dry.
I very much enjoyed this wine and I think if it was just a little more dry and minerally it would be a smashing success of a Reisling. It’s still very good for the price and I plan on purchasing it again for sure. I give the North by Northwest 2013 Reisling an 87 point rating and I can’t wait to share it with my husband when he’s back. He loves a sweet wine and this is something we can both enjoy!
