Boxed wine can get a bad rap but for good reason, the majority of boxed wines can be a bit dubious. I’m always interested in trying new ones, so when I saw Postulate 2014 Sauvignon Blanc at Trader Joe’s I figured I’d try it. My husband has been gone a lot and I don’t always want that much wine at one time, so it makes sense for me to try stuff like this. Most boxed wine I find deteriorates much faster than advertised. So into the breach I go.
Postulate 2014 Sauvignon Blanc hails from California but I don’t have a lot of information about how it’s made. Sauvignon Blanc is generally all done the same way so I’m sure it was done similarly to other bargain sauv’s. The ABV is 13% so it’s perfect for weeknight drinking. So far, I’ve been drinking out of it for 5 days. The first day the wine had a little more aroma but other than that it’s been pretty much the same. The spout doesn’t sit out of the box as well as some so you really have to have the right angle or you spill a bit of wine on the box. I keep this at fridge temperature, for the most part, I’ll leave it out for a few minutes on the counter so it’s not too cold, pour it into a stemless glass and have it with my food. I tasted this for the first time at about 40 degrees and in a stemless white wine glass. The wine was a very light yellow beige.
Postulate 2014 Sauvignon Blanc has a moderately perfumed nose with nectarine, gooseberry, guava, and passionfruit. The taste has a hint of new-mown hay, minerals, and lemon along with the nose aromas. When it warms up just a little I got some grapefruit as well. The acid is on point and the wine tastes clean and fresh. The finish is shorter than I expected and doesn’t carry much flavor other than minerals. As I mentioned before, the aroma was more dispersed after the first day I tried it. I have yet to reach the bottom of this 1.5-liter bag after 5 days of sparse sampling. The flavor profile has stayed the same but with slightly less stone fruit.
Is it worth $8? I think so if you are in a similar situation as I am. I haven’t been wanting too much wine lately as I’ve been suffering allergies. I would say that it was still ok for the money if the same juice was in a bottle but it’s not a huge value. The value comes in the fact that it stays fresher than just a day or so in the fridge. As of right now, I’d give it about 85 points. I may purchase it again in the future. We’ll see how well it stays fresh for another few days before I make up my mind.
