Sunday Riley Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream was released to the public not too long ago and before it debuted at Sephora there was already tremendous type. I know it feels like it’s been out for months but that’s mostly because you probably read fashion week stories where it was used by the SR team backstage and then a few weeks later it got released to select beauty outlets and bloggers to hype it even more. Yours truly isn’t an elite blogger, so I had to wait to try it. That being said, I bought it a few days after it was launched and I didn’t test it in store. I’ve come to trust the brand and figured based on the ingredients it was worth trying. I’ve been using for a while now and I’m ready to share my thoughts with you.
Which skin type is it good for?
What it is:
An advanced brightening, refining treatment infused into a next-generation water cream formula.
– Dark spots and uneven tone
If you want to know more…
Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream delivers an intense water drench with two forms of hyaluronic acid and tamarind extract, for hydrated and visibly plumped skin. Papaya enzymes smooth and exfoliate, while alpha-arbutin and giant white bird of paradise extract brighten hyperpigmentation spots and illuminate the complexion.
What it is formulated WITHOUT:
What else you need to know:
This product is cruelty-free. Alpha-arbutin is more powerful than the more commonly used beta-arbutin (also called bearberry or uva ursi). It is a glycoside of hydroquinone, and like hydroquinone, alpha-arbutin is one of the few ingredients scientifically proven in published journals to improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation spots.
“I was inspired by skin plumping power of water creams, but wanted to make something special. I formulated Tidal to be a brightening treatment infused into a water cream, for a cutting-edge answer to both alternative signs of aging, like hyperpigmentation, and the quest for the ultimate, all skin-types moisturizer. Papaya enzymes smooth the skin and gently exfoliate for immediate improvement in texture.”—Sunday Riley
Tested via corneometer (in vivo):
– 68% increase skin moisture by in 15 minutes
– Retain moisture for over 24 hours
Before we get into my review, I’d like to address the mixed reviews you might see online. We have been so conditioned to believe that to be moisturized you have to be left feeling tacky, sticky, greasy, or satin smooth. This isn’t really true. Most moisturizers out there have TONS of silicones and ingredients that make your face feel smoother when it isn’t. Your skin is just coated in gross unnatural crap. This isn’t a product that produces those results. It’s about moisturizing deep down and making your skin health better. Look at a babies skin, it’s plump, bright, and feels good but not artificial. That’s what you’ll get when you use Sunday Riley Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream correctly.
Well, how do you use it correctly? The most effective way to use it as with any product that is chock full of hyaluronic acids is to have wet skin. The ingredients bind water to your skin. The wetter your skin is, the better it works. You will use less product too. Here is how I have come to use it.
Wash face with Glossier Milky Jelly
Acid tone with Pixi Glow Tonic
Spritz with Gabriel Organics Sea Mineral Tonic
Essence with Fresh Black Tea Age Delay Infusion
Moisturize with Sunday Riley Tidal
In the PM, I add Sunday Riley Luna before Tidal and re-spritz after Luna sinks in.
I’ve tried mixing products and I find that I get the best from Tidal with it being used alone or in concert at night with an oil.
So what can you expect from Tidal? Really plump, flake free (provided you are exfoliating a little extra), glowing bright skin. Your fine lines and wrinkles will get a good plumping. Your skin will feel bouncy, fresh, and much younger. People might even compliment your skin. My results were pretty amazing. Let me give you give you a blow by blow.
The eye socket area and the pesky tear troughs were plumped. This made me look much fresher and less tired.
Cheeks were visibly plumped. Not to the point of looking like I had filler done but looking my well rested best.
My expression lines all over my face were improved. This was the most shocking. I’ve used other products with similar ingredients before (including Chanel) and they have all really helped those lines but I couldn’t even feel the lines with my fingers.
Facial dehydration lines were completely erased.
Lips were plumped like I used a plumping treatment.
My skin was brighter, I had a serious glow, and my Rosacea was calmed.
My makeup looked much better and I didn’t need any concealer.
Any pimples came and went very fast, with diminished post blemish redness.
Less oily T-zone and smaller looking pores.
A reduction in stubborn pigmentation spots from birth control pills I’ve had since my teens.
My skin would feel and look great for at least 12 hours.
I’ve had cumulative brightening results and my lines look better even when I haven’t used it.
First-day results! Ignore the sleep creases on either side of my nose. I was flushed from waking up and running around doing a million things in 5 minutes before I took this HD shot. As you can see no wrinkles, the under eye area is much improved and pores everywhere other than my nose are looking fabulous. Glow City, population: ME!
Two weeks in with minimal makeup. I used Smashbox’s oil primer with NARS TM sheerly applied with a damp Sephora sponge. I only used concealer on a zit.
Now let’s not fool ourselves. I had decent skin to start with. Not perfect but I eat well and I’ve made some strides over the last year to really focus on skincare that has increased my skin’s health as well made the appearance improve to where I was ok to go without foundation. I still had scars, redness, and expression lines but coming from having heavy acne up until my early 30’s for me to go anywhere public without makeup and feel ok about it was a vast improvement. Since using Tidal that has only increased. I’ve had several people tell me they thought I was in my mid-twenties including other people in that age bracket because my skin is so perfect. It really isn’t but from three feet away it looks pretty good and more youthful than ever. The funny thing is, the past few months have been some of the most stressful in years. I’ve been sleeping terribly and I’ve had tons of terrible things happen to me and my family. Fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, almost losing our beloved dog, extreme sickness, amazing amounts of work stress, marital tension, money issues, car issues, theft of personal property from my home, and I could go on and on. Hell, we had an active shooter in my neighborhood! My husband is gone for work too so I’m tackling all of this alone. So for people to tell me how young and vital I look from people who know me to strangers, it’s quite something.
As for the cream itself, it’s housed in a heavy plastic jar. I’d prefer a pump but I’m not sure the texture would work well with such a delivery system. It’s thick, bouncy, and a lovely shade of icy blue. The scent is overpowering until you get used to it. It’s very herbal but heady with a hint of the sea. It kind of smells like an expensive man to be honest. It’s a scent I’ve come to look forward too. The scent does linger for quite some time. It’s not advertised to use around the eye or lip area but I use it there with no issues as long as you don’t get too close to the lash line. I have noticed it will lighten my lip color if I use it there regularly so I’ve stopped. The cream glides on with a pleasing texture and if your skin is already moist you need very little product. When I first applied it, I did have some strong sensation of warming and almost stinging. It didn’t hurt but boy you could tell this stuff was powerful. You can also feel your skin plumping. I know that sounds weird but you will understand what I’m talking about when you try it. The warming sensation was lessened with use but never really went away. If I take a break from the cream for a few days, I get the plumping feeling again but not if I use it most of the days of the week. It sinks in quickly and there is no residue at all. I’ve had no irritation or additional breakouts. It’s a pleasure to use and it feels like it’s working. I know that’s not exactly scientific but I appreciate the emotional and sensual nature of the product. The creams ingredients are proven effective plus botanicals that support the skin and the results are written all over my face. The only negative I can say is this product has dimethicone in it but it’s in the middle of the ingredients list. You won’t see that on the Sephora ingredients list but it is in the informational ingredients list on the box. Normally, almost any silicone will give me an issue but this hasn’t. Perhaps my skin is more tolerant these days or it’s not enough to cause a major issue.
Personally, I think this cream is for everyone. Compared to the cost of other Sunday Riley products, this is a bargain and the size of 1.7 ounces is bigger than most moisturizers. If you’re in your 20’s with near perfect skin you won’t notice much more than a glow. If you’re anyone outside that 0.01% and you aren’t blessed with supermodel genes, then this will be helpful. Just remember this isn’t your average moisture product. You won’t feel slick, satiny, silky, or greasy. I’d also point out that I’m making sure I’ve used other good skin care and my face is moist before use. I’m a total Tidal convert. There have been other Hyaluronic acid products I’ve used that have helped but this surpasses them with properties that brighten, exfoliate, and help with hyperpigmentation of the hormonal variety. If you found that Good Genes was too strong for you, you might find Tidal a gentler choice.
