I’d been curious about the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Oil for a while. I hadn’t tried it in the store because the tester is always janky with crusty makeup handprints all over it. That being said, I don’t like silicones in large quantities. Most foundations have them now in surplus so I often feel like they should “prime” themselves. The way the market has gone is pretty much the opposite. They expect to use a primer. So many newer foundations look like shit without them. I mean from drugstore to high end. If you have any kind of pore or texture issue, you’re ass out. I kind of rail against this, mostly because I’m lazy, my skin hates silicones, and I’m poor. If I spend $50+ on a foundation, it should just freaking work well on everything right out of the tube. Alas, they don’t. Fresh made some great silicone free primers but they were DC’d so I’m always curious when those unicorns come through the wasteland of Sephora. When I got this in my Sephora Play box for March I squealed with delight. Seriously!
What it is:
A primer with the luxury of a face oil, infused with a blend of 15 essential and lipid-rich plant oils to moisturize the face for seamless foundation application and a dewy, youthful finish.
What it does:
This revolutionary primer preps your skin for makeup in two different ways: it sits on top of the complexion to smooth its texture, while it absorbs directly into the skin to hydrate and boost moisturization. It reduces the appearance of dry, fine lines and leaves you with a glowing look. Featuring a specially formulated, lightweight blend of jojoba, arabica, and argan oils, it’s also infused with soothing chamomile and lavender oils to calm the senses. Each is hand-picked for its known skin benefits.
What else you need to know:
“It always starts with a great canvas in the studio and radiant skin looks younger and healthier on camera.”—Davis Factor, Smashbox Founder and Photographer
The primer under my makeup is showing off all my skin care progress!
This Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Oil is pretty awesome. I don’t find it extends the length of my foundations. I’ve only tried it with two, NARS TM and NARS Sheer Glow. I do find it helps in these areas: texture, hydration, redness, glow and pore filling. They mention it sits on top of the skin. It does both in a sense. Whatever the oils are that stay closer to the top are providing a bit of resurfacing. It certainly brings out the best in both foundations. I’ve been more hydrated and even since incorporating Sunday Riley Tidal into my skin care routine. The Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Oil just helps take makeup pre-prep to the next level.
To use the oil, I distribute a few dots around my face with my fingers working in sections. Once I have about two drops on my skin I start patting and pressing until it’s spread out. I just move on like this until my face is done. Then I let it sit for a good 3 to 5 minutes to absorb and set. Then I apply my foundation as usual.
The oil has a slight smell, faintly floral. I haven’t noticed it breaking the foundation down at all or making me oilier. Even though it has two trigger oils in it, squalane and jojoba, occasional use seems fine with my skin.
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Oil certainly performs well and it’s silicone free. Is it a must? No, but it’s certainly a lovely product that I would recommend. The deluxe sample size I got will last quite some time but I will probably buy a full bottle when I’m out. Would another oil work as good? Possibly. This one seems to have some sort of pore hiding wizardry that other oils just don’t possess. That in itself makes it a great product for me. If your skin gets on fine with silicones and you aren’t trying to eliminate them from your routine, I’d still give it a try just to see how it stacks up.
