Since it was my birthday, I decided to splurge on Vietti 2014 Barbera d’Asti Tre Vinge. You might be thinking; it’s only $20. Well, that’s true it’s not much of a splurge, but it’s double the price of my regular bottle these days. I love Vietti; I’m a huge fan of everything I’ve ever had from them. This is no exception!
The Vietti 2014 Barbera d’Asti Tre Vinge is 100%, Barbera. The wine was given the royal treatment; lees, malolactic fermentation, Slovenian oak, and unfiltered. I chilled the wine to 60 degrees. I used my Vinturi and a stemless red wine glass. The wine has an ABV of 13.5%. The wine is a dark inky purple with a ruby rim. The wine had a plum scent when I opened the bottle.
The Vietti 2014 Barbera d’Asti Tre Vinge has a robust nose full of plum, currant, prunes, dried red and black fruits. It also hints of cedar and mushroom in the nose. It tastes just like it smells with additional notes of white pepper and tart plum in the extreme. The finish is very long, with a melange of dried fruits, forest flavors, minerals, and oak. When the wine opens up a little, you get a subtle menthol. The acidity is mouthwatering and perfect for food. One thing I noticed is the absence of vanilla. That makes it ideal for harder to match dishes. The wine is also dry as a bone. The tannins are restrained and delicate.
The Vietti 2014 Barbera d’Asti Tre Vinge is a great wine to enjoy with perfect meats or mushroom dishes. It’s light enough to pair with white meats with richer sauces. I would certainly put this on your must-try list. I give it 92 points.
